Keep Your Truck Safe This Summer
The complete guide to summertime truck maintenance.
Temperatures are hitting record highs lately, and that can lead to a higher likelihood of mechanical component failures on your truck. Here is a quick guide to help you know what to look for in instances of extreme heat.
Tires – Tire blowouts increase during the hot summer months due to the pavement temperature. Any weakness in a tire’s structure can be exacerbated by heat, and the results can be dangerous. Frequently inspect your tires for any cracks or punctures and check for signs of over and under inflation. Be sure to have tires balanced and rotated regularly, along with a routine front alignment check.
Brakes – Brakes generate a tremendous amount of heat from the friction they use to stop a moving vehicle. The summer’s high temperatures can lead to brake failure if the brake components cannot absorb any additional heat. Check your brake shoes/drums or pads/rotors, along with your brake fluid level before making your trip.
Belts and Hoses – Belts and hoses are made of materials that are affected by extreme heat. During the summer months, these items are more susceptible to tearing, fraying, and cracking. Check the tension and condition of your belts, as well as the condition of hoses routinely
Cooling Pack – With higher temperatures during summer and harvest here in the valley, the amount of dust in the air is increased. Be sure to check for excess buildup on the front cooling pack ex. AC condenser, radiator, and charge air cooler. Buildup on these components can cause air conditioning issues, high intake temperatures, and coolant overheating.
Filters – During Summer times all filters are more susceptible to premature plugging due to excess air contaminants. Be sure to check the engine air filter, cabin filters, and fuel vent filters routinely.
Coolant – During these hot times coolant plays a huge role in keeping engine components at proper operating temperatures. Be sure to check coolant levels regularly as well as replacing the coolant filter routinely
